A Letter From The Future

November 2, 2024

November 2, 1984

Hey Buddy,

It’s me. I mean, it’s you — 40 years from now.

I write this letter from the future to tell you that time travel is possible:

That “link” won’t make sense yet. You will have to wait a bit before you learn about the “Internet.” You will love it and you will play a part in developing that technology. In addition to being one of the first people to stream sports online, you will also play a major role in space travel. I know, it’s wild — your day dreams as a 6 year old become our reality as an adult.

I chose this moment to write to you because I know yesterday was the worst day of your life. I know because I was there. And, I know because no worse day has come for us yet. There are some very dark days that come over the next decades, though. Life will test you a lot. But don’t worry — you will survive and you will be grateful for it all. And one day, you will decide to make every day better than the previous day, and then every day will be the best day of your life.

Which brings me to the point of this letter. A week ago in 1984, a movie called The Terminator was released. The movie implies that you can go back in time and change things. I want to tell you that’s not how time travel works. You can’t go back and change things, no matter how much you want to. The secret to time travel is that it’s all happening at the same time. We are always traveling through time and time is always traveling through us. As I am writing this, you are dreaming it. As you are dreaming this, I am living it.

A few things to look forward to:

  • The Mets win the World Series in 1986.
  • The Knicks still haven’t won a championship in our lifetime but 2025 is our year.
  • Halloween will be fun again…when your son shares his candy with you.
  • Diwali will be fun again, too. You still won’t understand it, but it will be a public holiday in New York. Yes, a public holiday with schools closed.

I want to thank you for being so good to me. Past me has always made life easier for future me: clothes are folded, bed is made, keys are in their place, body is healthy and groomed.

Have fun brother. It’s the only thing that matters right now.

Thanks,

Tej

A Letter To The Future

November 2, 2064

Hey Man,

I hope 2064 is treating you well. Congratulations on today being the best day of your life.

I need a favor. I just sent a letter to 1984. I told 6 year old us all about time travel. He needed to know and I needed to tell him. I imagine that in 2064 you all have invented time travel by now. I need you to time travel back to 1984 and give him the letter.

We know the kid is obsessed with time travel. He’ll go on to create two time travel startups: one to capture all memories, and one to communicate with loved ones through time. And only after that entrepreneurial journey will he learn that happiness is the present moment.

I know it’s a lot to ask, but I’ve done some things to make it easier for you: clothes are folded, bed is made, keys are in their place, body is healthy and groomed.

I’m going to do one more thing for us: you won’t hear from me again. I’m staying here in the present. I’m happy here. And when the day eventually comes that we will meet in the future, I’ll be in the present moment then too. We will have fun and enjoy the best day of our life together.

In the meantime, good luck with that time travel stuff.

Thanks,

Tej
